Two questions decide it: who needs to see it, and how formal is it?

- **Short, timely, for every parent** ("Closed Friday for snow", "Picture day Tuesday"): an **announcement**. Parents see it in the app and get a notification.
- **Longer, formatted, multiple topics** (the monthly roundup, curriculum themes, a welcome letter): a **newsletter**. It supports sections, headings, and photos, and goes out as a proper email as well as showing in the app. Rule of thumb: if it has a subject line and more than one topic, it is a newsletter.
- **For one family**: neither. That is a **message**, a private thread. Never use an announcement for something meant for one household.
- **A child's moment-to-moment day**: the **feed**, which teachers fill as the day happens. You never "send" it.
