Announcement or newsletter, which should I send?

Short and urgent for everyone is an announcement. A formatted multi-topic update is a newsletter. One family is always a message.

Two questions decide it: who needs to see it, and how formal is it?

  • Short, timely, for every parent ("Closed Friday for snow", "Picture day Tuesday"): an announcement. Parents see it in the app and get a notification.
  • Longer, formatted, multiple topics (the monthly roundup, curriculum themes, a welcome letter): a newsletter. It supports sections, headings, and photos, and goes out as a proper email as well as showing in the app. Rule of thumb: if it has a subject line and more than one topic, it is a newsletter.
  • For one family: neither. That is a message, a private thread. Never use an announcement for something meant for one household.
  • A child's moment-to-moment day: the feed, which teachers fill as the day happens. You never "send" it.
